Sailing Through Asia: My unforgettable Journey Aboard the Discovery Princess

The Prelude

Every great journey deserves an unforgettable beginning, and ours started with several wonderful days in Tokyo before boarding the Discovery Princess. Arriving early allowed us to adjust to the time change while immersing ourselves in one of the worlds most fascinating cities. Tokyo is a captivating blend of ancient tradition and cutting-edge innovation, where centuries-old temples stand peacefully amid soaring skyscrapers and dazzling neon lights.

One of the best decisions we made was hiring a local English-speaking Japanese guide (check out "Get Your Guide") for our first day in the city. Having someone who understood both the language and the culture proved invaluable. Our guide confidently led us through Tokyo's extensive and efficient transit system, making what initially seemed overwhelming feel surprisingly easy. Just as importantly, he helped us understand some of Japan's unique customs and everyday practicalities that visitors might otherwise find confusing. We quickly learned that public trash cans are remarkably scarce and why carrying your own small towel is customary, as many public washrooms do not provide paper towels or hand dryers. These small cultural insights helped us appreciate Japan's emphasis on personal responsibility, cleanliness, respect and consideration for others, allowing us to experience the city with greater confidence and understanding.

One of our first adventures was experiencing the energy of Shibuya Crossing. Standing among hundreds of people waiting for the lights to change, then joining the wave of pedestrians crossing from every direction at once, was unlike anything we had ever experienced. Despite the incredible number of people, everything moved with remarkable order.

We also stepped back in time with a visit to Senso-ji Temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple. Walking through the iconic Kaminarimon Gate and along Nakamise Street, lined with traditional shops selling local snacks, handcrafted souvenirs, and colourful keepsakes, felt like travelling into Japan's rich cultural past.

To gain a different perspective, we visited the Tokyo Skytree, soaring high above the city skyline. From the observation deck, Tokyo stretched endlessly in every direction—a vast mosaic of neighbourhoods, parks, rivers, and towering buildings disappearing into the horizon. Looking out over one of the largest cities in the world gave us a true appreciation of its immense scale and remarkable beauty.

By the time embarkation day arrived, we already felt that our vacation had been an extraordinary experience. Then came the excitement of making our way to the cruise terminal and stepping aboard Discovery Princess, our elegant home for the next two weeks. There is something magical about unpacking your suitcase once and waking up in a different country almost every day. From the moment we settled into our stateroom, we knew we were about to embark on an unforgettable voyage with four more stops in Japan, Taipei, Taiwan, an overnight in Hong Kong, two stops in Vietnam and finally disembarking in Singapore. From ancient temples and bustling markets to futuristic skylines and tropical gardens, every destination offered something unique, while the ship itself provided comfort, exceptional service, and countless opportunities to relax between adventures. Looking back, beginning our holiday in Tokyo was the perfect prelude to the cruise. It allowed us to experience Japan at our own pace before setting sail across Asia, and it left us eager to discover what each new port would bring.

Japan Continued...

Our Japanese port visits each revealed a different side of this remarkable country. In Shimizu, we enjoyed the scenic beauty of Suruga Bay and although we did not get a glimpse of Mount Fuji that day (too cloudy) we enjoyed exploring this quaint little sea port nonetheless. Kyoto immersed us in Japan's rich cultural heritage, where ancient temples, tranquil gardens, and traditional architecture offered a glimpse into centuries of history and tradition. Kochi provided a warm and authentic experience, with its welcoming atmosphere, and dramatic historic castle showcasing everyday life beyond Japan's major tourist centres. In Kagoshima, the dramatic presence of the active Sakurajima volcano created a stunning backdrop as we explored the city's gardens, and historic sites. Together, these ports highlighted the incredible diversity of Japan—from iconic natural landmarks and cultural

treasures to charming local communities and awe-inspiring landscapes—making our time in Japan one of the most memorable parts of our voyage aboard Discovery Princess.

Taipei, Taiwan – A City Full of Energy

Our stop in Taipei introduced us to a lively city filled with fascinating contrasts. Although it was a rainy day, we enjoyed a stop at Taipei 101- a modern skyscraper rising far above the traditional temples we visited next. Althought the streets buzzed with scooters, markets, and food vendors the city's warmth

and friendliness felt welcoming and it was impossible not to be captivated by its vibrant culture.

Hong Kong – A Spectacular Skyline

Arriving in Hong Kong was unforgettable. Dramatic skylines and towering skyscrapers stand along side historic neighbourhoods creating a city where East and West blend seamlessly.

Exploring bustling markets, riding through the city streets, and watching ferries crisscross the harbour offered a glimpse into one of Asia's most dynamic destinations. As evening fell and the city lights reflected across the water, Hong Kong became one of the visual highlights of the cruise.

Vietnam – Rich History

Vietnam welcomed us with smiling faces, fascinating history, and colourful streets filled with constant activity (including the never ending noise of some of the 65 million scooters in Viet Nam). One of the highlights of our visit to Vietnam was exploring the ancient Po Nagar Towers, an ancient temple complex that has stood

for more than a thousand years. The intricate carvings, impressive architecture, and panoramic views of Nha Trang provided a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam's rich cultural heritage. Another memorable stop was the To Truong Son Craft Village, where we had the opportunity to see Vietnamese artisans preserving traditional crafts that have been passed down through generations while enjoying a delicious Vietnamese buffet lunch.

Singapore – A Perfect Grand Finale

Exploring Singapore for two days after disembarking Discovery Princess was the perfect finale to our Asian adventure. This is a city where modern architecture, lush green spaces, and rich cultural heritage come together in spectacular fashion. One of the first sights to capture our attention was the iconic Marina Bay Sands. Its three soaring towers topped by the remarkable SkyPark have become synonymous with Singapore's skyline, and seeing this architectural masterpiece in person was even more impressive than the photographs.

A relaxing ride aboard one of Singapore's traditional bumboats offered a completely different perspective. Cruising along the Singapore River, we passed beautifully restored heritage buildings, bustling waterfront promenades, and historic quays that tell the story of Singapore's transformation from a humble trading port into a thriving global city.

No visit to Singapore would be complete without stopping to see the Merlion, the city's famous half-lion, half-fish symbol. Standing proudly at the edge of Marina Bay with water cascading from its mouth, the Merlion represents Singapore's origins as a fishing village and its evolution into the "Lion City."

Reflections

This cruise was far more than a vacation; it was a journey through diverse cultures, remarkable history, unforgettable cuisine, and extraordinary landscapes. Each country offered its own unique character while reminding us how connected our world truly is. From Japan's peaceful temples to Singapore's futuristic gardens, every stop left us with lasting memories and countless photos. Yet some of the best moments weren't planned at all—quiet mornings watching the ship arrive in a new harbour, ceremonial greetings by the local authorities and enjoying sunsets over the South China Sea. As Discovery Princess sailed into our final port, I found myself already missing the rhythm of life at sea. The memories of this remarkable voyage will stay with me for years to come.
